Student Work Placement (formerly co-op work permit)

  1. As of April 1, 2026, students no longer require a co-op work permit in order to complete a student work placement required by their program.
  2. A student who has a mandatory student work placement (co-op/internship/stage) requirement as part of their academic program may be able to work full-time at the student work placement using the on-campus work conditions of their study permit. 
  3. The eligibility for a student to use their on-campus work conditions to work at a student work placement can be found on our Student Work Placement webpage.
  4. A student wanting to complete an optional internship must respect the requirements for .
  5. The student may not use their on-campus work conditions to complete a non-mandatory internship.

What if the student's Study Permit (or Work Permit) has expired?

  1. As long as the student applied to renew their Study permit before it expired, they are considered to have under which they have the right to continue working. As stated on the Immigration Canada website:
    If a temporary resident applies for renewal of their work or study permit and their permit expires before a decision is made, R186(u) and R189 (the right to continue working or studying under the same conditions pending a determination of their application for renewal) apply only as long as the person remains in Canada.
