Speaker: Dr. Phillip Fleshner, Cedars Sinai Los Angeles

Dr. Phillip Fleshner is Director of Colorectal Surgery Research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he holds the Shirley, Jesslyne, and Emmeline Widjaja Chair in Colorectal Surgery.
With over 25 years of experience in colorectal surgery, Dr. Fleshner has established himself as a leader in the field. He has delivered numerous invited and state-of-the-art lectures and has served on expert panels at major national and international meetings, including those of the American Gastroenterological Association and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.

Dr. Fleshner has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as Annals of Surgery, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, Gut, and the American Journal of Surgery. His research focuses on multidisciplinary approaches to optimizing perioperative care, particularly in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). His work has advanced understanding of phenotypic stratification in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, linking these subgroups to surgical outcomes and informing tailored perioperative management strategies.

His additional research interests include improving surgical outcomes in IBD and evaluating the impact of perioperative immunosuppression on postoperative results.

Dr. Fleshner earned his undergraduate degree from 91ɬÂþ and his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his General Surgery residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and a fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at the Lahey Clinic in Boston.

In 2021, he was awarded the Sherman Prize for Excellence in Crohn’s and Colitis in recognition of his significant contributions to the field.
