Current research:

The White laboratory focuses on the physiological implications of signaling through various ligand-regulated transcription factors, most recently the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR). Vitamin D is obtained naturally from limited dietary sources or photochemical conversion in skin exposed to adequate levels of ultraviolet B radiation. The active form of vitamin D induces DNA binding, and controls transcriptional regulation by the VDR, thus acting as a “gene switch”. The lab was the first to use microarray technology to study gene regulation by vitamin D to investigate the mechanisms underlying its physiological effects. Collectively, this work has identified over 1000 novel target genes of vitamin D signaling. It also opened up the field of study of vitamin D as a regulator of human innate immunity, which has implications for roles of vitamin D sufficiency in protection against upper respiratory tract infections and defects in innate immune homeostasis such as the inflammatory bowel condition Crohn’s disease. The laboratory has also made several seminal contributions to understanding the molecular basis of the putative cancer-preventive activities of vitamin D, work that has been borne out by recent meta-analyses of the results of large-scale RCTs of vitamin D supplementation. More recently, we have been studying the AHR, which functions as an environmental sensor and has emerged as a key regulator of immunity. The AHR can be regulated by ligands produced by the photochemical effects of ultraviolet irradiation, and our recent work has shown that the AHR can be activated systemically by exposure of skin to moderate levels of UV light.

Current research:

Much of our intelligent behavior and even our own characters rely on memory — the ability to remember past experiences and to bind information scattered over time, readily deployable to guide our actions. The human memory has been the topic of numerous studies over decades, providing an extensive description of its various forms, the relationship between them, the anatomical structures supporting each, and the conditions under which each one is engaged. Yet, we still lack computational models that could explain and predict many of the neural and behavioral observations that have been made over the years. My lab seeks to develop models and algorithms that can explain, predict, and ultimately regulate the brain responses (in the form of neural responses and the consequent behaviors) during visual tasks, specially ones that require short- and long-term memory. Our research builds on top of various tools and theories developed in machine learning, neuroscience and cognitive science. Developing computational models are becoming increasingly important in elevating our understanding of the neural processes supporting different behaviors, as well as for paving the way towards translating neuroscience into life-changing applications.

Current research:

I have been working in the field of quantitative bioimaging for over 25 years. My research has focused on applying biophysical techniques to fluorescence microscopy images to extract quantitative data measuring protein distributions, dynamics and interactions. I have applied these techniques to study proteins that regulate cell adhesion and migration to understand how migration is regulated at the molecular level in normal and diseased cellular systems. My research has also focused on optimizing live cell imaging to minimize phototoxicity and ensure the collection of high-fidelity data that is free of light induced artifacts. Quality control and standards for quantitative light microscopy have also been an important area of research. For 15 years, I have been directing the Advanced BioImaging Facility (ABIF) and developing and implementing active learning courses and workshops in fundamental and advanced light microscopy. In 2016, I also took over management of the Cell Imaging and Analysis Network (CIAN) light and the Cystic Fibrosis Translation Research Centre (CFTRc) light microscopes. Overall, I manage 18 research microscopes and a team of staff who provide high quality training and support for these advanced technologies.

Current research:

My long term research goal is to understand the basic mechanisms by which neurons process sensory information. While critical for diagnostic and treatment of sensory deficiencies, these mechanisms are poorly understood to this day. Since sensory processing strategies are shared amongst sensory systems, significant progress towards this goal can be achieved by studying the somewhat simpler sensory systems of lower vertebrates. These animals respond to simple natural stimuli with obvious behavioral relevance and share common brain architecture with higher vertebrates including humans. We use a combination of behavior, in vivo electrophysiology, and modeling to link cellular processes to sensory processing at the systems level as well as behavior in weakly electric fish. Research projects are on diverse topics such as: learning and memory, population coding of sensory input, feedback, and neuromodulators.
