Explosions, colour changes, and hands-on science: the 91ɬ Chemistry Outreach Group’s 24 Hours of Science Event

Published: 15 May 2026

On Saturday, May 2, families gathered at the Otto Maass Chemistry Building for an exciting day of discovery as the 91ɬ Chemistry Outreach Group held its annual 24 Hours of Science event, which welcomed 220 guests.

Together with the  (CRBS), the team proudly presented Chemistry Catalyzes, an interactive, curiosity-fueled chemistry show featuring eye-catching explosions, magical colour changes, fiery experiments, and a space-themed segment, including a look at how Artemis II made it into space. Two performances were offered to the public: an English show at 11 a.m. and a French presentation at 1 p.m.

"Through our presentation, we’re trying to show our audience the fun side of chemistry,” said Angelina Lapalme, Communications Manager at 91ɬ Chemistry Outreach Group and U3 undergraduate Bio-organic chemistry student. “We show the cool explosions all while making the science accessible to our audience, which is all to inspire the next generation of scientists."

Throughout the day, attendees were invited to take part in hands-on demonstrations led by passionate volunteers. Offering families and young learners the opportunity to discover scientific concepts through fun and engaging activities.

“I really enjoyed seeing how much fun the kids had making their own alginate worms – the process of cross-linking polymers,” shared Helen Zhang, a volunteer and first-year graduate student in Materials Engineering. “It was also very interesting to see how much the parents got into it as well. This shows how scientific curiosity really has no age limits!”

This event is part of the province-wide  celebration, during which over 400 science and technology activities take place across Quebec!
