Translational Biomarkers of Aging and Dementia

Recherches en cours:

Translational Neuroimaging Laboratory (TNL) develops biomarkers and analytical frameworks for modeling neurodegenerative processes including deposition of protein aggregates, metabolic abnormalities, cell transport systems and neuroreceptors dysfunction.

The laboratory encompasses a cohesive multidisciplinary team conducting integrative and multimodal neuroimaging research in human disease as well as disease models. TNL collaborates with an extensive network of laboratories and is committed to scientific training in the field of biomarkers.

Recherches en cours:

Dr. Harrison’s research program investigates the evolution and pathobiology of mycobacteria, integrating comparative genomics and metagenomics to study Mycobacterium tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections. His current projects focus on elucidating the genomic dynamics of non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections through direct metagenomic sequencing and on developing computational tools for comparative genomic analysis within the M. tuberculosis complex. His overarching goal is to link microbial evolution with clinical outcomes to improve the diagnosis and understanding of mycobacterial disease.

Projets:

1. Development and validation of a gene-level, reference-based pangenomic pipeline for the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex
2. In silico benchmarking of species-level metagenomic classification algorithms for the detection of Mycobacterium spp. in long-read sequencing datasets
3. Evaluation of host depletion strategies on the yield of Mycobacterium spp. sequencing reads for Oxford Nanopore metagenomic sequencing of human sputum samples.

Recherches en cours:

Phase 2 and Phase 3 randomized clinical trials of novel TB preventive therapy, individual patient data meta-analyses of treatment of TB disease, including multi-drug resistant TB, INH resistant TB, use of high-dose Rifampin for TB disease treatment, and treatment of TB infection.

Research interests also include the diagnosis of TB infection through TB skin tests and blood-based assays. He has an extensive network of collaborators across Canada and in many other countries for these studies. As Director of the 91ɬ�� WHO Collaborating Centre for TB research, he works closely with the Global TB group at the World Health Organization as well.

2. Analysis of health administrative data in Quebec for TB-related outcomes

Recherches en cours:

My research focusses on using adjunctive therapy and diabetes technology to address gaps in type 1 diabetes care. I have published various studies involving the use of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 agonists to improve outcomes using automated insulin delivery in adults with type 1 diabetes. The gaps I am currently looking to address are glycemic control, metabolic syndrome/ obesity/ body composition, T1D screening, ketosis, hypoglycemia, and pathways to islet transplantation. My research methods include clinical trials, retrospective chart review, and qualitative analyses.

Recherches en cours:

My research program focuses on iron metabolism, ferritinophagy, and ferroptosis in myeloid malignancies, with a particular emphasis on acute myeloid leukemia and clonal hematopoiesis. I develop translational strategies combining functional genomics, metabolic profiling, and therapeutic targeting to identify novel vulnerabilities in leukemia stem and progenitor cells. The long-term goal is to translate iron-handling dependencies into actionable therapeutic approaches.

Projets:

1.Targeting ferritinophagy and NCOA4-dependent iron recycling in acute myeloid leukemia stem and progenitor cells using CRISPR and pharmacologic approaches.

2.Iron metabolism and mitochondrial ROS signaling as therapeutic vulnerabilities in therapy-resistant myeloid malignancies.

3.Functional profiling of ferroptosis sensitivity across genetically defined AML subtypes and combination strategies with targeted therapies (e.g., BCL2 inhibition).
