Barreau activity no.\n10033637.)\nView the progra mme [.pdf].\nFor several decades\, 'culture' played a central role in\ncha llenging the liberal tradition and its legal and philosophical\nfoundation s\, a debate particularly acute in the field of human\nrights. 'Religion'\ , which also had posed a challenge to liberal\nthought for centuries\, see med to have almost faded away beyond\nconstitutional debates regarding the limits of free exercise.\nMore recently\, however\, religion seems to hav e reemerged as the\nnew central challenge facing Western liberal societies . The\nconference will address the significance of the growing presence of \n'religion' in contemporary law and politics\, and discuss the\nfollowing questions:\n\nHas 'religion' indeed taken the place of 'culture' as a cen tre\nof political tension and social integration? How have liberal\ndemocr acies faced the rise of religion in the age of\nmulticulturalism?\nDo reli gious and ethnic groups pose similar challenges to\nmodern liberal societi es\, or are these challenges significantly\ndifferent? Has the traditional struggle for 'religious freedom'\nbeen transformed to a struggle for poli tical recognition in line\nwith the more contemporary 'politics of identit y'? Are contemporary\ndiscussions of a 'post-secular' society similar to t hose of\n'mutli-cultural' societies?\nAre notions of religious belief bein g merged with cultural\npractices to enlarge the constitutionally protecte d autonomy of\nminorities? Can this destabilize societies viewing themselv es as\nmulticultural by relying on a common foundation presented as\nsecul ar?\nCan the notion of 'citizenship' escape any religious overtone\,\ngive n the significance of religious beliefs in the identities of so\nmany grou ps constituting modern societies?\nIs 'secularization' itself\, as some ha ve argued\, 'culturally\nbiased'? Is 'culture' in the final analysis nothi ng more than a\n'secularized' version of (Christian?) 'religion'?\nMore ge nerally\, what is the philosophical and legal sense of\n'religion' and 'cu lture'? Have these concepts and the phenomena\nthey represent undergone a historical change? Are we in need of new\nconcepts\, doctrines and theorie s to comprehend and resolve the new\nchallenges of religious revival in th e post-multicultural age?\n\nOrganized by Tel Aviv University's Minerva Ce nter for\nHuman Rights\, and 91ɬÂþ Centre for Human Rights and Legal\nPlu ralism.\nFor more information or to register\, please email chrlp.law [at] mcgill.ca\, or view the\n\nList of confirmed speakers [.pdf].\nPHOTO CRED IT: 'Floating Lanterns\,' Dwight K.
